Local Parent Lea Minalga Joins Partnership for a Drug-Free America In Honoring National Legislators in D.C.
2007 Guardian Awards recognize efforts to combat substance abuse.

Washington, D.C., September 26, 2007 – The Partnership for a Drug-Free America announced the recipients of the 2007 Guardian Awards at a ceremony held at the United States Capitol. The Guardian Award is given annually by the Partnership in recognition of leadership on substance abuse issues and efforts to protect America’s families from the dangers of drug use.
Lea Minalga, Director of Hearts of Hope /”The MOM Squad” of St. Charles and member of the Partnership’s Parent Advisory Board, one of a committed group of parents from around the country who help guide the development of Partnership tools and resources; went to Washington last week.
Minalga presented the 2007 Guardian Award to United States Senator for Illinois Dick Durbin. Senator Durbin has been a champion for public health issues, including preventing drug abuse among children and increasing access to family based treatment services for pregnant and parenting women. He has fought to secure funding for important programs such as Meth Clean-up, Drug Court programs as well as drug prevention and treatment services for his constituents in Illinois.
“Protecting the public health has always been of the utmost importance to Senator Durbin and we thank him for his ongoing dedication”, says Minalga.

Hearts of Hope / “The Mom Squad” is announcing a new drug prevention and
education program called “Drug Proofing Your Kids”. It is for parents of
children of all ages interested in learning more about the epidemic drug abuse
problem that our children face from a remarkably young age.
Your awareness and
knowledge gained from participating in these sessions will better equip you to
inoculate your children early and give you the tools you’ll need to deal with
any drug related problems they or their friends may encounter. It has become
essential knowledge for parents today according to the Drug Enforcement
Administration.
Hearts of Hope plans to conduct the program this Fall at their
offices in Geneva. The program requires meetings one night a week for 6 weeks.
Contact Lea Minalga (630-232-9210) to enroll, for further details, or with any
questions.

September 2006
September is National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month. Hearts of Hope
/ “The Mom Squad” announces the launch of a new Ambassadorship Program aimed at
reaching deeper into our communities with our message of hope to all who are
struggling with the problems of substance abuse and addiction. We have a
membership list of several hundred people we communicate to and are asking that
they make a small commitment to the organization to reach out and to speak to
others such as employers and coworkers, other service organizations, churches,
and civic groups. We can provide speakers to attend meetings and make
presentations once the member has established the contact introducing them to
the Hearts of Hope mission: Restoring Hope for Our Children Through Education
and Advocacy for Drug Free Communities.
We are dedicated to educating the public
on how drug and alcohol abuse severely impacts the family unit and the
well-being of the entire community. We offer compassion, encouragement, and hope
to those suffering with addiction and their families affected by the disease.
The drug addiction problem among our youth today is a disaster within our
society which puts “Katrina” to shame in it’s magnitude and impact. It is
shameful that our government acts as though they are helpless to control the
flow of drugs to the street corners of our towns and cities. It is an even
bigger shame that our governing bodies at all levels do so little to fund
programs of rehabilitation and recovery instead of incarceration. The National
Vital Statistics Report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
measures drug-induced mortalities and reports nearly 20,000 per year.
Drug-related emergency department episodes total more than 600,000 per year.
Addiction is a disease of the brain and a scourge upon our society. We are all
affected either directly or indirectly. Some of us survive and stand as symbols
of hope.

January 2005
Hearts of Hope / ”The Mom Squad” working in support of families of addiction
wants the community at large to know of the generosity bestowed upon the group
by the employees and affiliates of the Shodeen Corporation. The group was
selected as recipient of this year’s employee annual giving fund. As part of the
corporation’s holiday celebration, Hearts of Hope was invited to the gathering
held at the Herrington banquet facilities and presented with the an envelope
containing the most generous monetary gifts. Mr Kent Shodeen on behalf of his
employees made the presentation to Lea Minalga, the founder of Hearts of Hope,
and announced that he personally would be sending the group a check matching
that amount. Also present representing the group were Ruby Garcia, Elsa Reinke,
and Jim Lingle, who also expressed the group’s sincere appreciation.
Hearts of
Hope / “The Mom Squad” has been organized and operating for over three years in
our local communities. They run weekly support group sessions, speak to church
and school groups and community organizations to educate and raise awareness,
counsel with the incarcerated, and produce the drug court’s annual graduation
ceremony. The all-volunteer group has been unfounded and has no paid employees.
They rely completely on the dedication and generosity of their membership,
fundraising proceeds, and individual donations. Earlier last year the group was
provided office space in Geneva by the Shodeen Corporation.
